Partial Voluming

The partial volume effect (when a pixel represents more than one kind of tissue type) blurs the intensity distinction between tissue classes at the border of the two tissues. - e.g. ventricle, always shows grey in between white and CSF, but in some locations there is grey matter there. Boundaries at the separation of the left and right cerebral hemispheres, cerebrum with cerebellum, and the bottom of the cerebellum are difficult to locate because on either side of these boundaries there is tissue with similar grey scale values and these tissues are pressed together. Example: upper left of 1_24_29 show histo of this region (+3D pictures) against histo of all of the cortical grey matter. pv.tiff, pv.cor.tiff, pv.sag.tiff, pv.axi.tiff show where it is pv.histo give the smoothed histogram.

A fairly common example of the partial volume effect.
